My day revolved around the Debate Competition for this year’s CBEM Intramurals. I have been a member of the Accountancy department’s debate team for 4 years. It’s something I’ve loved since I chose Argumentation and Debate for my elective back in 3rd year High School.
We were four members on our team. Fien, a sophomore, our prime minister; me, the second speaker; Shela, a junior, the third; and Karlo, my classmate, our scribe. Karlo doesn’t really write down the contentions of the other side but he does listen with such scrutiny that he can offer us rebuttals on the spot. Either Shela or I should’ve been the prime minister but our past experiences as such were traumatizingly disastrous so we opted not to take on the task.
The first bout was between the Management and Economics department. The motion was “Social networking sites invades one’s privacy” or something like that. Didn’t get the exact words. It was boring. There was only one worthy opponent from Econ and none from Management. The former won.
The second bout was an easy win. Well, actually, there was no second bout. We won by default cause the group of the Entrepreneurship department didn’t show up. So, it was between us and Econ.
Our final bout had us on the Government side under the motion “Freedom of expression in artworks should be justified”. Obviously it was in reference to the CCP exhibit. I found the motion a blur because it was quite not debatable. Even the panel of adjudicators said it was an issue already resolved some time ago, and they were quite impressed with our audacity to argue.

To cut the story short, we won and I was fortunate enough to snatch the award for Best Speaker. I didn’t join any other event and I have the entire Intrams to enjoy. Great week ahead.
